Meet Gee Schwalenstocker, 2016 What A Fan Awards 2016 NFL Fan of the Year Nominee. This Pittsburgh Steelers fan has been described to us as one of the nicest and most inviting sports fan you'll ever meet. She truly embodies our mission of respect and inclusiveness with both home and visiting fans. We're pleased to recognize this bubbly and colorful lady.

Sports fans have been an important part of the explosive success both collegiate and professional athletics has enjoyed. In 2013 a recognition award show was created to honor fans and their contribution to the sports industry it's called the What A Fan Awards. Its has been held in Orlando Florida for the last three years and has now been relocated to Los Angeles California beginning July 15th 2016. Over the coming weeks we're going to introduce you to some of the countries most devoted fans of all genres of sports  in their own words.

How long have you been a sports fan?

I got my season tickets to Three Rivers Stadium for the 1980 season... I got interested in football and the Steelers, when Terry Bradshaw and company, with the coaching of Chuck Knoll started taking the STEELERS to the Super Bowls. I started with the bra around 1994/95.. I thought I heard Myron Cope say something about Terrible Lingerie on his radio show. SO, I went out and bought the biggest satin, yellow bra I could find, 52 DD. Took it to the tailgate and hung it on the stand up cardboard Myron Cope I had. We got into the Playoffs and I stuffed it and added black lace and wrote on it ... THE TERRIBLE BRA... and it was born. I of course wore it to the playoffs games and then Super Bowl XXX. I would only wear it for playoff games, and then started wearing it to away games, the girls and I went to. Not quite sure when I started wearing it all the time.. I got it signed by Myron Cope and retired the original.. Made a new one, that is black lace and added gold tassels, and YES, I ca n spin them... I have so much fun wearing it and spinning the tassels for people... getting pictures with people.. holding their beer cans in my bra.. I even let people touch the bra and I then make this shocking face... It's just a good time and fun with the other fans, and even opposing fans. Sometimes I do a little dance with my bra on them... Of course, I let people try it on too. One Halloween Steeler game, my Dear Friend, Jen from the Steel City Mafia, tailgate next to us, surprised me and came dressed like me, with a bra and wig, and everything I wear... It was one of the funniest things anyone ever did to me... My poor husband, when he saw there were two of us.. He just shook his head and said, "OH NO, THERE ARE TWO OF YOU". I have pictures and photo albums of almost every game I ever attended. I traveled with the girls from HUNTZ''S GIRLS TRAVEL LEAGUE. The Steelers organization is a fine operation of Coaches, Staff, Owners, and Players. Steelers try to hold a high level of integrity with its team members. When some one gets out of line, they let them know, it is unacceptable behavior. I am proud of the city of Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Steelers and all they represent. 

Why should you be selected the winner in this category?

I would be honored to be chosen... I have so much fun with people. I invite anybody, who says they are coming in for a game, to our tailgate THE TERRIBLE BRA AND GRILLE... GOLD LOT # 4.. Right across from McFaddens Restaurant and Bar. We welcome opposing fans too.. OF COURSE, we have a bit of fun with them... I had to lap dance this one guy.. it was his birthday and his first game. I always go and get my picture taken if people ask, and I stop anytime... even on my way into the game, and I never like to miss kick off... I throw "Steeler touch down dust" after every touch down... it is this confetti that is tiny pieces of shinny colored paper... sticks to everybody and everything... I love the Steelers, and don't like people taking them or the coaches down... I say we can all have our opinions, but no need to get mean and nasty about it... and some people do. I love to laugh and make people laugh... I love to share pictures on my facebook page: The Terrible Bra and Grill e. Our tailgate entered a contest for Jim Beam and we had to make a video. We won in our division of the country, but not the ultimate win of going to the Super Bowl, which Steelers were in...( I can share it if you like to see it) I did go to the Detroit game with Jerome Bettis. and the Steelers.. awesome game and time, I made it to the Hall of Fame when Bettis got inducted. I have gone to the Super Bowl in Tanpa, but couldn't afford or have a ticket.. BUT.. we tailgated and ended up watching the game in the lot with a bunch of new Steeler Friends... I try to help anyone that is trying to help other people, last year our tailgate collected, hats and coats, etc. and this year we collected small items for our local troops. I make sure I get them to the proper hands and know they will be delivered by her. We have fed the homeless, when they come by.. always share what we have. I have brought down extra blankets and given them out to the homeless. I don't have a designated room fo r all my Steeler stuff, like some people, One of these days, I hope to take a room and put all my stuff in it... and I do have the stuff.. 35 years is a long time to collect Steeler stuff.... I try to buy something new every year, this year it was a pair of gold glitter cowboy boots, and a black and yellow feather hat. As you can see, I buy off the wall stuff, but then again, some people think of me as "off the wall". Our tailgate has lost two of our very important menbers in the past two years. We hang a sign under The Terrible Bra and Grille sign, that says... For those now watching from Heaven... we love you... then their names and birth and death dates. These two men got in line every home game and saved our special spot so we could tailgate. We met these guys tailgating next to them years ago and decided to combine our tailgates.. some fine people I have met along the way. I know as long as I can continue to walk and climb up to peanut heaven (I tell everyone I sit with Art Rooney Sr, and he is dead and in Heaven). nine rows from the top... I will go and cheer my beloved Steelers on and of course continue to tailgate and wear my TERRIBLE BRA and make people smile and laugh.

What triggered your passion for sports?

Well, to be truthful, jumping on the band wagon when the Steelers were in there HEY DAY... Swan, Green, Ham, Lambert, Shell, White, Bradshaw, Holmes, Stallworth, Blier, just to name a few of the greats. YES, I went out and bought my Steeler stuff and decorated the bar where I worked with black and yellow... That was just the beginning .... Pittsburgh was proud of their football team and still is. I do watch some Penguins Hockey, and baseball, even go to a few Pirate games each year. Took me a long time to learn about football from watching it.. and still am learning new things all the time. I don't pretend to know all the facts about sports but can talk a good enough game about what is happening on the field. 

Favorite sports moment?

I went to Detroit for the Super Bowl against Seahawks. I had no ticket. I went with my youngest son, Tim. We met up with my middle son, Dan, who was living in Charleston, S.C. at the time and was a morning radio DJ. All his audience knew he was a Steeler Fan. One of the wives had her husband sell Dan the extra ticket they had. Tim and I met up with Dan at an Irish bar.. Met the group he was with and bought them all a drink (Pittsburgh tradition) Had my bra on of course and carrying a sign, saying we need tickets.. and another sign that said WE BELIEVE. Well one of guys approached Tim and said how much money do you have to spend, He said he could spend 700.00 and Mom could spend only 650.00.. Ticket price was 600.00 The guy said give me the money, we did, he gave us the tickets and handed Tim back 50.00 and said it was for beer money. Found out later, that guy could have sold the tickets at another bar bar 2300.00 a piece! He didn't like the people.. Pretty amazing story isn't it? So I got to wear my Bus hat and my terrible bra. Cheer on the Steelers and go watch Jerome Bettis last time he ever played and win in his home town. AND I WAS THERE TO SEE IT. all because of kindness from another person.

Who would you like to meet and why?

I would like to meet Jerome Bettis. I have this beautiful black and white poster size photograph of Jerome that my son, Dan gave me. Dan now lives in Costa Rice, and has a Steeler bar. I would like to have it signed by Jerome and then frame and give it back to my son. Besides, Jerome is a all around good guy and I would love to shake his hand and tell him how much I enjoyed watching him play and I seeing what he does for Pittsburgh, even still to this day. Not living here.. but leaving his legacy here. 

What charitable programs are you involved with?

I never go past a Salvation Army red kettle, and not put something in it.. no matter how many times I go by the same one.. I always pick some names off a Christmas tree and buy something. I told you, I gave blankets to the homeless, and collected coats, hats and gloves for a church and this year collected items that can be sent to our local service men.. Years ago, I wrote to men in Dessert Storm. I don't have any one special charity I do for. My husband and I always donate to certain charities each year. Can't ever go by without dropping money for Children's Hospital. I am actually a sucker for anyone collecting for any good cause.

How does you family feel about your passion for sports?

They all probably think I am a bit crazy... My husband just smiles and shakes his head. When my sons, and I would walk into a game, they loved the stares and comments people would say about me... I don't really think anyone is embarrassed by what I wear. They know I love going to the games and tailgating. I know they would be thrilled and proud of me if I won an award. 

How was your character or costume created?

I actually told you this before, but here it goes again... Myron Cope had a talk radio show, and I thought he mentioned something about terrible lingerie. I went out and bought this biggest yellow satin bra I could find. I brought it to the next tailgate with me and hung it on the cardboard Myron Cope, that I have. I next stuffed it and added black lace and wrote on the bra, THE TERRIBLE BRA. I started wearing it for playoff games... I wore it to Super Bowl XXX. I used to say,, "some people have the terrible towel, I have the Terrible Bra". I have a friends that says he has it on video. I wore it to away games that I attended with the Huntz's girls traveling league. Not quite sure when I started wearing it to every game. Still don't wear it for preseason... only real games. So I think I started wearing it sometime in 1994. We finally started calling our tailgate THE TERRIBLE BRA AND GRILLE, when my friend, painted it on our huge home made grille he made. We now have a banner that we hang that says: Welcome to the Terrible Bra and Grille Tailgate For years, I just wore the Terrible Bra over all my clothes and coats, and still do today..

How important is it to you to have an award show for fans?

This would be an amazing award, if I should win. I would be recognized as the fun loving Steeler Fan that I am.. and put another feather in the cap of the City of Pittsburgh and the Steeler Football. It would be an honor to be selected.. doesn't everyone like to be honored for something they do in their lifetime? 

What would winning mean to you?

I would feel so proud of that someone has noticed the fun loving Steeler Fan that I am ... Win or Lose.. I am there ... Heat or Snow.. I am there. I even try to work around the Steeler schedule so I am not away for any home game.. I catch the games away or tape them and watch them later.. and don't look at the score or paper. I know my family and friends would be amazed and proud of me as well. I never try to draw attention to me purposely... I am who I am... I wear what I want to. I have had some people not even notice the bra at firs... Say, wow, I like your hat. One guy was staring at my chest (the bra) and I said to him ' didn't anyone ever tell you it was polite to look at someone, when talking to them.... not their chest!" HE then said," Did anyone ever tell you, that you have beautiful eyes/" It was great fun and we all laughed. I can't even hardly imagine winning.. I would be tickled PINK or BLACK AND GOLD, I guess I should say. If I found out by winning, that I could help other people after I won, that would be an extra bonus.

Meet Houston Crawford, What A Fan Awards 2016 NFL Fan of the Year Nominee. The Cincinnati Bengals have some amazing fans, its typically hard to select from such a fanatical fan base. This year we were bombarded with people pointing us in Houstons direction. He's one passionate sports fan!

How long have you been a sports fan?

I have been a Cincinnati Bengals fan since birth! There isn't much else I can say except I was born into it! I grew up loving the Bengals! Who Dey! 

Why should you be selected the winner in this category?

I think I should be awarded the 2016 NFL What A Fan award, due to the fact my support for my team has never waivered! even during the 1990's. I love my team, and I love the fans! I love meeting fans from other teams, I travel to most of the Bengals away games also, so its awesome getting to meet super fans from other teams! Its always awesome welcoming visiting fans into my tailgate also! I always welcome other fans to my tailgate with open arms and smiles! Its been amazing meeting fans from all over the country, and world! I support my team thru thick and thin, and no matter what I wear my team colors with pride! No matter the outcome of the game, I am always respectful of the other fans and their team! I Love all of the other super fans that I have met thru my connections and no matter the outcome of the awards, I look forward to connecting with them at Bengals games! I do a lot with fans with special needs also, I'm always letting kids and other fans put my helmet on and take pic tures with them! because at the end of the day, Football Is Family!

What triggered your passion for sports?

What triggered my passion for sports? I have to say that my grand dad always taking me to Baseball games and football games, I have loved playing sports my entire life from Baseball to football, to Basketball, I played it all! But I have to say I have the passion for sports that I do because of my attitude, I grew up always striving to be the best and always working hard at getting my athletic ability better, which before my knee I was getting pretty good! But at the end of the day, Sports are one of the most important things in my life, and with that is my team, I represent my Cincinnati Bengals wherever I go, no matter our record! Who Dey! 

Favorite sports moment?

My favorite sports moment would have to be every Bengals game I attend! Nothing I love more then supporting my team, and also getting to enjoy the fans around me weather home or away games! I love the tailgates at home with my crew, and also the tailgates with Super fans from around the NFL, exploring the cities and areas around the stadiums! But if I had to just pick one event, It would have to be in 2005 when the Bengals finally clinched the AFC North Division crown! It was amazing to finally have a playoff team in Cincinnati!

Who would you like to meet and why?

If i could meet anyone it would have to be Paul Brown, and to thank him for bringing Pro football to Cincinnati! just pick his brain, and to just get to know one of the greatest football minds ever. But, Since he has passed away, I have just the NFL Films videos, and every now and again when i get to talk to his son Mike, who is the President and owner of the Bengals! 

What charitable programs are you involved with?

I am not associated with any charitable organizations as of yet, but I always do what i can to help the less fortunate, Ill bring toys to the toys for tots events at the stadiums, I always invite people with disabilities to our tailgate, not too long ago, when the Texans were in town we hosted Matt the Champ, an awesome 6 year old, who has a medical disorder, we raised funds to fly him up from Houston Texas and gave him the all star treatment! I would love to connect with other super fans and build a charity, that sends less fortunate kids and their family to NFL games! I am always trying to help people, I am a former firefighter EMT, so being a kind yet passionate person has always been my thing!

How does your family feel about your passion for sports?

My family supports and loves my dedication to my passion, which is the Cincinnati Bengals. It also helps that most of my family are Cincinnati Bengal fans also! They understand the love and passion that I have always had for sports! I have had girlfriends in the past learn football just to know what kind of mood I would be in the following week whether the Bengals won or lost! But at the end of they day my family has been awesome supporting me in this journey of becoming the Bengals Super fan! Who Dey! 

How was your character or costume created?

My outfit came along in bits and pieces, I am a former Firefighter, Emergency Medical Technician, so I had an old Fire fighter helmet laying around and one day before I was to travel up to Cincinnati for a Bengals game in late 2011 I decided to go get the Bengals team color paint! One thing lead to another and it looks just like the Bengals Helmets, with the stripes! I also put a Bengals tiger patch on the front of it. It looks pretty awesome! I wear an Andy Dalton Jersey because that's my quarterback! and the Bengals team issued Nike thermawarmth turtle neck, with the Bengals team Issued practice shorts, and also Bengals socks that come up to my knees! I'm very easy to spot in a crowd supporting my team! and then someone called me "Bengals Superfan Houston Crawford and its stuck! also the Bengals Fireman! 

How important is it to you to have an award show for sports fans?

I would like to think its very important to have an awards show for the Super fans of the world! To show our dedication and Passion to our teams and our Cities that we represent! I love my team and city with a passion that is unrivaled. Also for people to see inside our lives that we are great people inside and out of the stadiums! I have been interviewed a few times by the local news crews and I'm recognized out side of the stadiums and its been awesome getting the exposure! I enjoy getting to know other super fans from around the NFL! and I cant wait to connect with them during this process that I have been nominated for! But at the end of the day I think its awesome that there is an awards show that does recognize the time and effort and charitable work we put in, not only inside the stadiums but outside also!

What would winning mean to you?

I think to be able to win the 2016 What a fan, fan of the year award representing the City of Cincinnati and also the Cincinnati Bengals of the NFL would be an amazing honor! It would be an amazing step into the right direction for me! I would be like my great friend Havok, from Baltimore and wear the name with great pride and honor! to finally be acknowledged for my dedication and loyalty to my team that i love so much would be a great honor! It would be awesome to travel over seas next season with the title of Fan of the year! when my Bengals play the Redskins in London next season! I have to say thank you to everyone involved with this process for nominating me, and I hope that I am what you are looking for as your 2016 Fan of the year in the NFL!

Sports Fans Roll In Sports

Sports fans have been a vital part of the explosive growth of both the professional and collegiate sports industry. The growth is undeniable. Fans impact on the sports industry is more powerful then you may realize, when fans support a team or individual player they're passionate about, the economic benefits are massive. Take the Cleveland Cavaliers when Lebron James first joined the team as an example, the downtown community was alive with activity and growing. The business community and entertainment nightlife was as hot as ever before. Once King James left the castle that same area became a ghost town. Examples of situations like this can be found across the sports landscape.

Fans affect a number of industries in and around sports. Not all sports organizations can afford to put a winning product on the field, court, ice or track. They could not survive on fan attendance alone, so many of them depend on other areas of financial support received and divide among the Owners and Players Associations. An example being television rights and players jersey sales that help subsidize struggling teams, but again those examples are fan driven. No eye balls on the television screen no money to give and no merchandise purchases by the fans means no money to be divided.

The moral of this story is the explosive growth of the sports industry is a partnership of all parties involved, Teams, Players, media, merchandise and fans. It maybe somewhat unbalanced meaning sports fans seem to be doing most of the heavy lifting but a partnership just the same. What A Fan was created to show appreciation for fans contributions to this partnership. Fans should be recognized for all they bring to the table on a consistent basis. The Creation of our Annual What A Fan Awards and Sports Fans Conference were developed to provide a platform to celebrate and honor these unsung fanatics. They deserve to be appreciated and celebrated for all they do for sports and in their communities!

Isn't it time the sports fan receive some recognition and appreciation for all they do? We think so and we're taking steps to make that happen throughout the year. Meet Joseph Ruback, What A Fan Awards 2016 NFL Fan of the Year Nominee. This die-hard New York Giants fan is know as the "License Plate Guy" to the fans of his favorite team but to us he's much more then that. His relationships with current at past Giants players is a testament to the connection some fans enjoy. It goes past the X's & O's and cuts to the reality that good people gravitate to good people. How long have you been a fan?

Giants fans are bred into the family – that’s how I became a Giants fan because my dad is a fan, his dad was a fan…. I had no choice. So I have been a Giants fan my whole life... 30+ years! Games Attended: 14 consecutive complete seasons, all home and away games All home games since the Meadowlands opened in 1976. All 5 Giants Super Bowls, I can’t talk about Superbowl 35. It cannot be mentioned. On the field at the end of Superbowl 46.

Why should you be selected winner in this category?

My passion for the New York Giants is born out of respect for an incredible game and understanding that fans play an important role in the experience. I am not “that guy” getting blitzed and foul-mouthed at a game. This is a stone cold sober passion. It’s all about the game and the team and keeping the experience about healthy competition and fun. I only cheer forward. As there are role model players such as the Eli Mannings of the game, I believe so should there be fans with the same class, integrity, and professional morality and ethics. It is my goal to emulate and represent these same qualities. My life has been shaped by New York Giants, a world-class organization. If selected, this ultimate honor could elevate my fortunate story of fandom and serve as a role model to fans, which is important in this increasing day of fan violence.

What triggered your passion for sports?

I have been passionate about sports longer than I have memories. It has always been in every corner of my life - from my job, to my hobbies, to my overall way of being. It started with being bred as a Giants fan, it continued in organized sports throughout my whole life (baseball and football) that continues, and now I coach and teach. There is nothing like teamwork, commitment, and competition. Football is, and always has been in my blood. In fact I'm pretty sure I bleed Giants blue.

Favorite sports moment?

My favorite sports moment was in Superbowl 42, "the Great Escape" with Eli Manning, followed by the Tyree catch (matched to date only by Odell Beckum's one-handed catch). On the NY Giants year end DVD I was featured after this clip grabbing by head saying "Oh my God! Unbelievable!" To be a part of this sequence is amazing and an incredible honor (and fortunate editing!) . It was the "un-official" birth of License Plate Guy as shortly after, social media erupted and the rest is history.

Who would you like to meet and why?

I would like to meet Tim Mara, the original owner of the NY Giants. He purchased the team in 1925 for $500. First, I'd talk him into giving me a piece of the team (and seats of my choice....) Seriously though, I would ask him what he saw in this team (not even a franchise at this point), what goals and visions he had for the organization, and if he could fathom what football has become today.

What charitable programs are you involved with?

I'm involved with NY and NJ Special Olympics for the Giants Snow Bowl annually. I also am an ambassador for the MetLife Easter Seals in NJ. I just put together my first annual charity softball event for St. Jude's at Provident Park in Pomona, and was very fortunate to have Odell Beckum, Andre Williams, DaMontre Moore, Steve Weatherford, David Wilson, and Prince Amukamara to name a few.

How does your family feel about your passion for sports?

My family is the reason I am able to continue following this dream - and I've found that I've created a Giants family of friends that I look forward to hanging out with and cheering with on the road.

How was your character or outfit created?

I wore my first license plate, G1ANTS, to a game when I was 16 on a bet from my dad. To date I now have 30+ plates that have been sent to me from fans around the country. They are all authentic license plates that are NY Giants themed. I started making my custom jerseys with a buddy who moved overseas, and these have become as much a part of my "routine" as the license plates.

How important is it to you to have an award show for fans?

It would be great to have a show to interact with fans and talk about sports and issues. I have found social media to be a great way to meet and talk with fellow fans and athletes - with over 19,000 followers on Instagram and 10,000 on Twitter I think that the Giants have a draw and conversation that many would like to hear! On a side note, I love the show Ellen - I would so be like her and give everything away! Giants Football meets Ellen, hosted by License Plate Guy would be the BEST. EVER.

What would winning mean to you?

It would be such an honor to be recognized in this way. I am fortunate to have the support of family and fans, and deep friendships with many of the players. To be honored in this way personally would make sense of the last 14 years spent going to every single game home and away. More than that, I think it would encourage people to follow their unique dreams, live out loud and be who you are - authentically and without apology.

Meet Justin Bennett, What A Fan Awards 2016 MLB Fan of the Year Nominee. Not all fans are able to attend their favorite teams games or purchase season tickets but there are many ways of supporting your team. We love to see sports fans that leave in different states they remain loyal and steadfast with their devotion for an organization. Good job Justin!

How long have you been a fan?

I've been a fan for 19yrs

Why should you be selected winner in this category?

I should be chosen because I been a die hard fan for so many years who until the last few years have struggled and I've remained loyal. The fact that I have been up and down the east coast including the hall of fame in my suit is another reason. One of the first to wear such a suit for the Os as well.

What triggered your passion for sports?

My uncle took me to Camden yards when I was 6 and I was sold. Been a fan since. Love the game. 

Favorite sports moment?

Every time I'm at the yard.

Who would you love to meet and why?

My family loves it. All oriole fans so it's awesome. 

How was your character or outfit created?

Always wanted to have the superhero feel and the suit does that for me. Even Before the suit Came along I Dressed Crazy At games. Suit has been around about 5 years now.

How important is it to you to have an award show for fans?

Very important. Makes people feel appreciated for what they do for the game.

What would winning mean to you?

Would mean a lot. I do for the love of the game but It would be something special to me and Os nation.

Ezra Castro, What A Fan Awards 2016 NFL Fan of the Year Nominee

Meet Ezra Castro, our What A Fan Awards 2016 NFL Fan of the Year Nominee. We are pleased to see this outstanding Buffalo Bills super fan submitted for Nomination once again. He's been a fixture at Bills games for years, additionally he is truly compassionate and continues to be an active community servant. We wish him luck.

Sports fans have been an important part of the explosive success both collegiate and professional athletics has enjoyed. In 2013 a recognition award show was created to honor fans and their contribution to the sports industry it's called the What A Fan Awards. Its has been held in Orlando Florida for the last three years and has now been relocated to Los Angeles California beginning July 15th 2016. Over the coming weeks we're going to introduce you to some of the countries most devoted fans of all genres of sports  in their own words.

How long have you been a fan?

I have been a Buffalo Bills fan since 1986. Right before the glory years. I’m celebrating my 30th year. I consider it from the WOMB to the TOMB! 1986 was when I started playing pee-wee football. Me and my dad felt the need for me to have a team to follow.

Why should you be selected winner in this category?

NFL Fan of the Year! Through thick and thin, win or lose, all the heartache, all the boos, all the stare downs, you name it, I will Always BILL-ieve!! Most people jump wagon when their team is doing well. Not me, I drive the wagon year round. There is no offseason for me. Your award says “Year”. That’s me, YEAR round fan, not just Aug-Feb. I put a lot of heart and passion into this sport. I live NFL. It’s my hobby, its part of my life! God, Family, Football! 

What triggered your passion for sports?

My Dad... He loved football. Of the 4 sons he had, I was the only one to play football at a young age. Started at age 7. I knew it made him happy to support me, so I kept at it and fell in love with the sport! Competition and Life lessons I continued to learn while active in sports kept me going. Teamwork, discipline, and respect are all contributors to triggering my passion for sports.

Favorite sports moment?

My favorite sports moment was when the San Antonio Spurs won their 5th NBA Title. They won the title on Father’s Day. It was a special day to remember. That title meant so much to the organization. Talk about teamwork, hard work ethic, and sticking together as a whole. It gave the term Dynasty to the San Antonio Spurs. The only sports moment that will top it off is the Bills winning a Super Bowl. 

Who would you like to meet and why?

I would love to meet “Barrel Man” Tim McKernan. Who I consider, the first Ultimate/Super Fan of Fans. He led by example of what it really means to be a Super Fan, threw supporting the team and charitable work. Through the good, bad and ugly, he represented all the time. I would love to ask him tons of questions. The first one would be, “Define Superfan!?”

What charitable programs are you involved with?

As of today, the only charitable work I'm involved with is with the PFUFA organization. Every year we visit the J. Babe Stern Community Center in Canton, OH, to support and provide under privileged children with school supplies and goodies to help their families out. We are full characterized and it brings such joy to the kiddos. I do assist friends with $$ donations to specifics charities when in need and the funds are there. I do what I can, when I can. I too am a STRONG Supporter for the FANS AGAINST CHILD ABUSE campaign, Fans Against Violence and Toys for Tots. 

How does your family feel about your passion for sports?

My family is very supportive. They think I'm Crazy. They love to tell their friends about my get up. I usually provide my trading card to them for them. (signed) My family has traveled with me as well. I have 2 children. Their mother is my number 1 fan. Im a strong BILLiver, that if you dont have your families support, you probably being a Superfan for the wrong reasons. My FanMilia, is another story, they are crazy like me! Everyone loves the fact that after all these years, I’m still a Bills fan. I get a lot of shaking heads and firm handshakes for my commitment.

How was your character or outfit created?

I'm Hispanic. My mask came from the "Lucha” aka Wrestling back ground. My Sombrero came from the vocal singers/group, Mariachi's. My Pancho is an added touch to the Hispanic culture. It’s what we wear. I have custom jeans with words "VIVA LOS BILLS" which is my get up phrase and of course the custom boots to add the awesome touch. I recently added a Carrilla, a chest holster and arm bands. In hopes to give me that extra crazy Hispanic Bills fan look. I started back in 08’/09’ wearing my mask to various games. I felt it was the cool thing to do. Slowly started adding item after item and then before my eyes, It was a full go to wear it all! 

How important is it to you to have an award show for fans?

I feel that an Award show for Fans is very important. No professional league really recognizes the hard work, the charitable events, the travel expense and time that we fans take to support them. It’s all money to them, but to us it’s all memories. This is an excitement for us fans and what we do is being recognized and listened to with this show. That in itself is something that keeps me going.

What would winning mean to you?

Winning this award would mean the "MUNDO" to me. (World) I have come a long way from the small city of El Paso, TX to becoming a Buffalo Bills fan. Who would have thought that a young Hispanic boy from the crazy lower valley streets of El Paso would be so in love with a team hundreds of miles away? I have spent numerous hours on the road, away from family, worked tons of overtime, volunteered numerous hours and lost my voice plenty of times to win this award, but most important, I have shaken hands with all other teams’ fans. Sportsmanship wins you over with everyone. I don't know if this would apply but it too would be an HUGE honor to be the 1st NFL Hispanic Award recipient. We are all one. We are all family.

Meet James Allen Godley, What A Fan Awards 2016 NFL Fan of the Year Nominee. This Oakland Raiders super fan may seem seriously intimidating to look at but get to know him and you will quickly realize he is as compassionate about his community as he is passionate about his Raiders. We could not be more proud to honor him this year.

How long have you been a fan?

I have been a fan since I was seven years old. It started in 1970; I am originally from Greensboro, NC. My mom married my dad who was a Marine. We had to move to Cherry Point, NC. After living in base housing for a short time my dad received orders to go overseas for a year. Since his orders were shorter than a year the family could not go with him. He had to find us a place to live out in town because we could not live in base housing without him. When we moved into our new home the house next door was vacant. The people who lived there must have been from California because I found an Oakland A's helmet and an Oakland Raiders helmet in a sand box. Since I had previously lived in the country, this was one of the coolest things I had ever seen. This was the start of my passion. It would drive my mother crazy with my obsession for a team from California. It was hard for her to find things in the 1970s. Back then we had no internet and North Carolina stores did not carry anything Oakland Raiders. The first thing I ever received was an NFL Team jacket that she ordered from Sears. You know the one made of wool and had fake leather sleeves? I loved that jacket. Shortly after my love for the Raiders started I fell in love with the left handed Quarterback from Alabama, Kenny Stabler. I was also left handed and because people treated left handed people differently, it was great to see him on my favorite team. 

Why should you be selected the winner in this category?

Being chosen for this category would mean a lot to me for the simple fact that the perception of the Raider fans are trouble makers or gang related. That is all I had ever heard about Raider fans. I started being able to attend Raider games in 1991 and I got to meet some of these fans and I know they are just like me and very passionate for their team. To be chosen will be more for the Raider Nation rather than me. The Media’s perception may change from violent troublemakers to extreme fanatics. If I win then having the title would allow me to share my word about eliminating fan violence. I am a proud member of Fans Against Violence and if I can show people that you can go to sporting events and cheer on your team without causing trouble. This way we can keep this a family atmosphere so the passion will go on. I am passionate about my team and I love helping others to enjoy their experience at the live games, especially kids. I usually show up about four hours early to meet fans from both teams and encourage them to have a great time and to stay safe. I have never passed up an opportunity to take a picture with any fan. If we don’t build the passion for the sports that we love with our kids then the sport will not last.

What triggered your passion?

My passion from sports was as a kid watching the Raiders on television and playing tackle football in the yard with my friends. We tried to imitate the moves of the professional players. When I was 12 years old I suddenly wasn’t able to play it anymore. I had been diagnosed with Acute Lympocytic Leukemia. Not being able to do anything just increased my desire to be able to do it. I went through treatment and then started playing sports again. I played football with the Pop Warner league and baseball with Babe Ruth. I had some great coaches. They inspired me to do my best. Even though some knew my past medical condition and they often tried to limit me so I would not get hurt. Ray Woodall was the only coach that I never told and he pushed me harder than any coach I had. I got to be a first string player. I am a stronger person today for it. My enthusiasm still continues today with sports. I use this passion to bond with the kids. For 14 years I was involved with Pop Warner as a coach or as the Eastern District Commissioner. Youth sports are a place for kids to have fun, learn sportsmanship, and to challenge themselves. It develops confidence and lets them be part of a team. 

Why did you want to become a super fan?

I have always seen the Super Fans as part of the team and the image of being independent and not afraid of being different. They represent the spirit of the diversity and they want respect. They are never wavering. They stand tall and walk proud. They will chant their team name with honor as they march the streets going to the stadium. Players like Ted Hendricks, John Matuszak, Lester Hayes, Kenny Stabler, Jack Tatum, and Lyle Alzado created a bad boy image. The team’s aggressive style of playing helped them to win three super bowls. Members of the Raider Nation take pride in their image, and many devoted Raiders fans dress up in elaborate costumes on game day. Many of these costumes are intended to be intimidating and unusual while also adhering to the Raider's silver and black color scheme, and many fans also create alter egos for these characters as well. These fans are typically the ones that are most associated with the Raider Nation and The Black Hole (1). I am proud to be part of this Raider Nation. I created my alter ego Destruction as a representation of who I am; I fit this image of being intimidating and not afraid of being different. I am always devoted to my team. REFERENCE 1. Favorite sports moment?

My favorite sports moment has to be to when I went to Atlanta to see the Raiders play the Falcons in 1991. This was the first game I ever went to. It was the first game the Falcons went back to black uniforms. They titled the game as Black Sunday. It was an exciting game because it was the first time I got to see the Raiders play in person. The game was not that memorable other then we lost. It was after the game that made it more memorable. My wife and I had checked in our luggage at the airport because we had a flight right after the game. The game was not going so well. We decided to leave four minutes left in the last quarter to beat the crowds. On our way down the escalator at the airport, I noticed a tall man and told my wife I thought I knew that guy. My wife laughed and said that we didn’t know anyone in Atlanta. We got into the train to take us to the terminal. I kept talking about this guy and others who were on the train. There was another man in a Raider shirt that was next to us. He said he overheard us talking. He asked me,” Who do I think that guy is?” I said I thought it was Greg Townsend of the Raiders but did not know how he could have been at the airport so early. The guy said it was Greg Townsend and said as a matter of fact that everyone on the train except for you and your wife are with the Raiders. I looked around and right next to me was sitting Ronnie Lott. As we arrived at the terminal we were located right across from the terminal where the Raiders were waiting for their plane. While waiting we all went to a diner to get a bite to eat and all the players were around me. I was in such awe that I could not even speak or ask for an autograph. 

Who would you like to meet and why?

I would like to meet GOD. I know this is not the traditional answer. I relate this question to the kids that I have met who have been sick with many terrible diseases. I had cancer twice in my lifetime and have decided to help kids with illness and helping them to understand and encourage them with their recovery. We adopted a daughter who lost both of her parents to cancer. Why did she have to lose the most important people in her life? Mickey Marvin, a former Raider player, who is one of the best Christians I know. He now has ALS. Why does such devastating disease have to happen to such a great person? If I could meet GOD then I could ask him why the kids have to suffer from these terrible diseases. Why are unspeakable things happening to good people? I have asked my pastor and still have not gotten the answer that makes reasonable sense. If GOD could provide me this answer then I may be able to help others with understanding this.

What charitable programs are you involved with?

After my second fight with cancer I was invited to an American Cancer Society Relay for Life event. After that event I because involved with Relay for Life for the past 19 years, as a walker, team member, team captain, or committee member. Through these events I have met many people who are going through treatments like I had. In some way I want to give them hope and encouragement for what they may have to experience. I am a member of the Fans Against Violence. Even though this organization is struggling to find its way I wear their patch on my outfit. I use it as a way to bring up conversation about ways we can stop the violence. On a more local note I have volunteered with fundraisers, support committee, cook and delivery person for families that are in need from illnesses or injuries. My business partner and I are on call for our local food pantry for unloading food donations because most of the volunteers are elderly and not able to move large quantities or the heavy items. As a building contractor, my partner and I are often called from our pastor to volunteer our time with assisting the Department of Social Services for families in need. We have fixed leaks in roofs; installed handicap ramps, fixed broken windows, etc. We have been asked to assist in other charitable causes from people who know us in our community. 

How does your family feel about your passion for sports?

My family probably thinks I am crazy for being such a fanatic. They are supportive and encourage me in my efforts for promoting Fans Against Violence and helping others. A few of them are also Raider fans. My wife of 31 years knew I was always a super fan and knew she could never change that about me. She is always by my side. I have taken my kids to the games when I am dressed as Destruction. They see people trying to take pictures with me and how it brings another level of excitement for being at the game. We live so far away I try to go to as many east coast games as I can so my family can go with me. We often joke that our vacations all revolve around Raider games. My family enjoys the other fans and Raider fanatics. The Raider fans are a great group of people to hang out with. My adopted daughter was a Steeler fan but after going to a game she become a Raider fanatic and has started dressing up. She calls herself Little Miss Raider. My son and I have not missed a Raider vs. Panthers game yet. We are a close family with lots of love and support for each other. All my family members love to cheer me on and openly admit they know me. LOL. They are my super fans.

How was your character and outfit created?

My outfit started after going to my first Raider game and seeing the other Super Fans. The idea came from playing off the Raider Pirate and Grimm Reaper themes. I kept going to Halloween shops and found items that I could use. It has evolved over the years. I started going to games as Destruction in 2003. I went through the tailgate section and met Spike and many of the Super Fans. They all liked my outfit and accepted me as a true fan. I am a contractor so the name Destruction fit me as well as being a representative for the Raider Nation. 

How important is it to you to have an award show for fans?

I think it is very important to show the fans contribution with sports. Without the fans there is no reason for the sports. The fans, like the athletes, drive the sports. I would think that an award for the fans only help drive the sports to grow. Fans have a lot of spirit. The spirit increases the excitement. An award like this may give a platform for those that are doing charity or volunteer work that may help other s to become involved with it. It is great to be recognized for your efforts. It encourages others to contribute. I believe no fan should be bigger than any other of the fan base. We are all just one. It can show you don’t have to be from the same state to be as big of a fan as a season ticket holder. As part of the Raider Nation of the Crystal Coast Booster Club, I get to meet fans who came from all over. When we went to London we got to meet some great fans there as well. Raider Nation is international. The fan awards bring together the best from all sports and all types of fans. Just win baby.

What would winning mean to you?

First of all just being nominated is an honor. The nomination only has to come from one person who thinks that you are worthy of being recognized for the work that you are going. I am extremely honored that I was nominated by Dylan Hershberger who was the winner of the 2015 Kids Award. Prior to being nominated I did not know what the award was for. I never got into being a Super Fan to be nominated for an award. Winning the What A Fan Award will help me with getting others attention and maybe getting them involved with making a difference by working either with the charities that I care for or ones that will inspire them. My family and friends will certainly get more from award status then I would because that just isn’t me. I just want to make a difference. This award would help to alter the depiction of a Raider fan. I can send this out to the media when they say something negative about the Raider fans. On a personal note it would be great to know that I can be recognized as being the same level of fan as the one that gets to sit in the stadium every week. Being in North Carolina is a challenge but this challenge does not hold me back.
