Meet Ray "TubaGuy" Bridges our 2016 What A Fan Awards NFL Fan of the Year Nominee. This Indianapolis Colts fan is been following his beloved Colts forever. We were first introduced to Ray by a fellow fan that sent us a feature story the local media did on him some time ago. It was such a great feature we tracked him down to honor him with this Nomination. Good luck Ray!

Sports fans have been an important part of the explosive success both collegiate and professional athletics has enjoyed. In 2013 a recognition award show was created to honor fans and their contribution to the sports industry it's called the What A Fan Awards. Its has been held in Orlando Florida for the last three years and has now been relocated to Los Angeles California beginning July 15th 2016. Over the coming weeks we're going to introduce you to some of the countries most devoted fans of all genres of sports  in their own words.

How long have you been a fan?

My wife and I moved to Indianapolis the final week of 1986. When the NFL season started for 1987 we decided to check out our new "home team", the Colts. We became hooked and we've been going to games ever since! Season ticket holders, we've been to 18 different NFL stadiums, Super Bowls XLI and XLIV and hope to continue to add to our "away game experience" count! 

Why should you be selected the winner in this category?

I have been a "Fan Ambassador" of our team for over 20 years, encouraging local fans AND visiting fans to become involved when I play "CHARGE!" DISH Network named me as an NFL Ultimate Fan in 2006, recognizing my enthusiasm for my team and the sport overall. I LOVE NFL football!

What triggered your passion?

I was born and raised in central Ohio, the HEART of football country! I then moved to Canton, OH and lived 1 mile from the Pro Football HOF! I love the pageantry, the planning, the challenge, the adjustment, the entire "big picture" of the typical NFL game! So many life lessons parallel the game. I have been fortunate to forge so many friendships, both local and league-wide among NFL fans. NFL fans are THE BEST!! 

Favorite sports moment?

Standing in the stands in Miami, soaked to the bone, watching my beloved Colts finally reach the absolute pinnacle of the NFL! WORLD CHAMPIONS! My wife and I were there!! It was worth it, after so many seasons of futility, of being close, of "almost making it." Almost NO MORE!!!

Who would you like to meet and why?

I would love to meet and talk with Jim Irsay. While he certainly has his quirks, he has constantly strived to make his team competitive to fight for the championship every year. And he never forgets the FANS! He is a FAN'S owner! I appreciate having a total organization to be proud of! 

What charitable programs are you involved with?

I work closely with various Animal Rescues in Indianapolis. We have had 26 animals go through our home since we have been married. This year, I also hosted the Inaugural Bark For Life Walk with the American Cancer Society in Zionsville, IN.

How does your family feel about your passion for sports?

My wife is as crazy about our Colts as I am!! She was inducted into the Pro Football HOF as the FIRST Ultimate Fan representing the Indianapolis Colts. It is a TRUE family affair with us! 

How was your character born?

I originally took my horn to a pep rally over 20 years ago and played my 1st "CHARGE!" The fans went nuts! I was told I played it better than the recorded version the team used at the time. Somebody called me "TubaGuy" and it stuck!! And my bald head just SCREAMS for a giant BLUE Horseshoe!!

How important is it to you to have an award show for fans?

The FANS are an ACTIVE part of the sport. We bring enthusiasm, passion, volume...things that can literally affect a game. Outside of the game, fans have the opportunity to carry that passion into charities to directly positively affect their own local fanbase in areas of need. To be a FAN is a privilege, not just a right. 

What would winning this award mean to you?

To be selcted as the NFL Ultimate Fan would be vindication of everything I have mentioned above. Be a fan, be an ambassador, use your visibility for good. I believe that you can and SHOULD make a difference, wherever you are. This award would enable me to continue to make a difference and to grow my efforts in the future!

Jeff Christiansan, What A Fan Awards 2016 NFL Fan of the Year Awards Nominee

Meet Jeff Christiansan, our What A Fan Awards 2016 NFL Fan of the Year Nominee. This Kansas City Chiefs diehard is just another example of fans ability to combine the passion with the creative side. It takes all kind of fans to continue the incredible growth sports enjoys and we're proud to honor this devoted fanatic.

How long have you been a fan?

I have been a Chiefs fan for over 25 years! Its started with My love for football but most importantly for the one and only DERRICK THOMAS!! Then the Chiefs kept adding great people like Marcus Allen, Neil Smith, Joe Montana. When I was in the 4th grade I got to meet Mr. Lamar Hunt at a golf tournament in my home town Vail, Colorado and to me that was cooler then meeting the President of the US! Everyone in my family are all huge Broncos Fans, and they just couldn't get why I so dedicated to the Chiefs or the "Enemy". My grandfather became a season ticket holder for the Broncos in the 1993 season and starting in 1994 he would take me to the Chiefs games and that was always mine and my grandfathers thing to do every year! that continued until I was 17 years old. Then I found ways to go on my own until I was able to afford it myself. Now even though I live in Denver, Colorado I am a Season Ticket Holder at Arrowhead! 

Why should you be selected winner in your category?

I think that I should be chosen for this award because being such a huge die hard fan born and raised in Colorado and still just as passionate as day one I took being a fan to the next level. I created IncredaChief in 2011. When I would go to games in Denver I would see so many little kids that where just like me when I was young. Big Chiefs fans and being raised by Broncos Fans and living in Broncos Country was not easy! I wanted to be they guy to show them that I was ok to be different! It was ok to like a different team. Then I started getting involved with charity work. Dressing up as IncredaChief visiting kids in the hospitals, participating in many walks (for ALS, Diabetes, Ect.). To even hosting local fundraisers for local kids fighting cancer. Becoming a Superfan has been the best thing I have done in life so far! it gave me the opportunity to do things for my community, giving kids hope and joy in hard times and rep the Chiefs all at the same time! the work we do is not only while football is on But year round! we are always doing work on and off the field!

What triggered your passion for sports?

My passion for Football started when I started to play it in the pee wee leagues. I was able to play in so many positions. Football was always on my mind it was a way for me to step out of reality and just look at the world and life though my face mask. The friendships and brotherhood we got from our teammates was a bond that you could only dream for! Its something you never want to lose or let go of. So we are able to create the same kind of relationships as super fans! 

What made you want to become a superfan?

I got involved by watching and seeing so many Super fans while Growing up was very interesting to me! They where always having the most fun, the best tailgates the most popular and I really loved how much more fun they always made game days, or any event that they might be doing at the time. I always thought THATS WHAT I WANNA DO! I wanna be like that! But never thought I could pull it off because I was Chiefs living in Colorado. I went to my First game at Arrowhead and my life was Changed forever! I went more and more! meeting some of the superfans I long time looked up to and came back so motivated to create my IncredaChief idea more then ever! Nothing was gonna stop me now! Not even Colorado! I started going around to different Sports bars on game days meeting so many people and in just 4 years I was able to get to where I am now!

Favorite sports moment?

My favorite Sports moment so far was us taking about 9 Special, kids to the Draft party at Arrowhead where they had such a blast and even got to meet some of the players! We even dedicate the 2 pre season weeks to the kids and take them out to the games! Seeing the joy and the excitement they have is the best feeling in the world! 

Who would you like to meet and why?

I have a few in mind but with Derrick Thomas being my guardian angel now my other person I would love to meet is Christian Okoay, Because of everything he did in his career for the community of KC, The youth, and even his home! He has shown me that it doesn't matter where your at now. or where you maybe later. You can still make a positive impact no matter where you are!! you just have to have the passion, the goals and the heart!

What charitable programs are you involved with?

I have yet to find and settle with one main charity but this year my main charity work is being done for a 12 year old boy named Trevor. He has a cancerous tumor in his brain that was not able to be 100% removed surgically because it has intertwined in his brain. Now he has to go through 36 weeks of Chemo that they started on his 12th Birthday, and 7 weeks of radiation 5 days a week. I have a Tailgate party coming up in October for him and was able to team up and get support from other teams and fan basis! its so amazing to see us all come together as one team! I also did a ALS Walk, have the Diabetes walk, first downs for down syndrome and any other event that pops up on the schedule. 

How does your family feel about your passion for sports?

My kids love it!! Every time they see daddy get dressed as IncredaChief they know we are about to have some fun!!! However sometime try to keep IncredaChief to them selfs. My Wife on the other hand sometimes feels like it takes alot of our family time away but she supports me 100% she gets amazed by how much of an impact it can make doing what we do as Superfans!

How was your character and costume created?

IncredaChief was created because like I have said before it is not easy being a chiefs fan in Denver! I had to be strong and use better judgment and decisions at times. I just wished sometimes I had a Chiefs superhero or someone big to be with me sometimes when I was majorly out numbered, After my first trip to Arrowhead I thought it was my time to just become the super hero that I always wished for and be that hero for the kids that are like me when I was that age. I took a character from the Incredibles and made it my own! 

How important is it to you to have an award show for fans?

I think it is very important! It shows a since of accomplishment in everything that we all put our hearts and lives into! It also keeps us close with other fans around the country and we can team up and help each other if needed! We would have our own alumni! What A Fan is a great idea and a great investment!

What would winning mean to you?

Winning this award for me would mean so much! It would not only be something I have is rewarding for my passion but something I could have to show my Wife and others that This is a big deal! and what we do off the field is a big deal but most of all this award would be a huge honor!

Meet Ryan Shibley What A Fan Awards 2016 Best Sports Parody of the Year Nominee. We are  pleased to recognize the talented artist behind some of the most entertaining and humorous sports parody videos in the world. This is a new category being introduced this year and we are so pleased to honor everyone Nominated in this category.

What's your favorite sport?

It's so tough to truly narrow it down because I really love Football, Basketball and Baseball. But if I had to pick my favorite sport I guess I'd go with Basketball and my favorite team the Boston Celtics. I played 4 years of college basketball at Emerson College in Boston and basketball has always been my # 1 sport.

How long have you been a sports fan?

I've been a fan of sports for as long as I can remember. I'm the youngest of 4 kids in my family and all of my older siblings were into sports so I was simply born into it. My earliest memory of being a sports fan is back in 1988 cheering for the San Francisco 49ers when I was 5 years old. I'm still a 49er fan to this day! 

Why should you be selected the winner in this category?

I should be chosen as the 1st Winner of the Sports Parody category because I've created so far 11 sports parody videos which vary in terms of music videos and sketches. Several of my sports parody music videos have found their way to TV and Radio in the markets of the teams that I've targeted. My Buffalo Bills "Playoffs" parody music video has close to 100,000 views already. My Deflate-Gate parody music video "Deflate it Nice for Brady" was voted a Top Five Deflate-Gate parody by the HOUSTON PRESS along with the videos created by "Saturday Night Live" and "Jimmy Kimmel Live". I have sports parody videos/songs that touch upon Football, Basketball, Baseball, Hockey, Soccer, Golf and Tennis.

What triggered your passion for sport?

I love competition... I love training together as a team for that ultimate goal/prize... I love winning... I love the simple act of playing (and that goes for any sport)... and I love watching my favorite teams/players rip it up on Game Day!!! 

How did you get involved with producing sports parodies?

Well back in the summer of 2009 I created my first sports/comedy video which was a segment called "Sports Sketch Live" and it involved me as the news anchor. It can be found up on YouTube and that opened the door for me wanting to create more comedy videos. Then in October of 2011 I created my first two parody music videos that didn't yet touch upon sports. I realized how much I loved coming up with concepts, lyrics and music video ideas. So then in 2013 I created a 25-minute sports sketch comedy spec TV pilot which I kicked off with my first sports parody music video. From that point on I was hooked and I've since created 10 other sports parody music videos.

 Favorite sports moment?

It's a tie between the New England Patriots defeating the St. Louis Rams in the Super Bowl back in Feb. 2002 for the franchise's 1st ever title AND the Boston Red Sox knocking off the New York Yankees in the 2004 ALCS after being down 0-3 in the series. Both were amazing, both happened while I was in college in Boston, and they are 2 of the greatest sports moments the city of Boston has seen in the last 14 years of dominance in that city. 

Who would you like to meet and why?

I would like to meet either Joe Montana or Tom Brady because they are 2 of the Top Three quarterbacks of All-Time and they have led my 2 favorite football teams to glory!

What charitable programs are you involved with?

I currently donate to "Guiding Eyes for the Blind" and the "Special Olympics". I've been donating to each organization for many years now. 

How does you family feel about your passion for sports?

My family is a family of sports fans so they are very supportive of my sports passions and they enjoy watching the sports/comedy videos that I create.

How important is it to you to have an award show for fans?

I think it is extremely important because let's face it.... Sports fans make up a huge aspect of the sports world. Without fans, players and teams would be playing in front of empty stadiums and probably wouldn't even be showed on Television if there wasn't a big interest from the fans. Fans live and die with their teams and they show up rain or shine, great record or lousy season, and even during important life/world events. Fans bring the passion to the players on the field, bring life to the sports atmosphere, and allow these various sports leagues to thrive!  

What would winning mean to you?

Simply put.... It would validate all of the time, effort, money, excitement, and sorrow that I've put into my own sports parody projects as well as to what I've given to the various teams that I've cheered for throughout my life. It would be a great honor!

Meet Sarah Meaghan Robinson, What A Fan Awards 2016 MLB Fan of the Year Nominee. This diehard Baltimore Orioles fan is a testament to the colorful expression fans display. We are are excited to honor her for her passion and dedication to baseball.

How long have you been a fan?

I have been a fan for 26 years.

Why should you be selected winner in your category?

I love my Orioles and support them win or lose. I put my whole heart into trying to support my team, and to represent all that is good as an Orioles fan!! THE BEST FANS IN BASEBALL!!! 

What triggered your passion for sports?

My Parents would bring me to Orioles games when I was a baby. I grew up watching baseball, collecting baseball cards, and also playing softball. I was always trying to learn the different parts of the game.

Favorite sports moment?

When I was about 8 years old I was in the Junior Baysox Club and was able to learn how to field, throw, and all around play the game of baseball. It was a really awesome experience and one I will never forget. 

Who would you like to meet and why?

I would love to meet Cal Ripken Jr. He was my favorite player growing up and I was so upset to see him retire.

What charitable programs are you involved with?

I am not as involved with charitable Programs as I would like to be yet. I have been doing a few 1 mile to 5k walks for breast cancer, Casey Cares, and Kids Peace. I am also working on making jewelry to sell to donate proceeds to the Casey Cares foundation. 

How does your family feel about your passion?

They support me 100%. they love it. We love going to the games together.

How was your character or costume created?

About 4 years ago I really wanted a way to support the Orioles. You always see and hear about football no matter what season it is and I wanted to show some love for baseball. So I tried to create a headband that said Orioles on it. But once I did that I didn't like the attention I was getting, so I decided to make myself a mask then it kind of grew from that.

How important is it to you to have an award show for fans?

It would be really cool to get an award but I wouldn't say it was really important. I do it for fun to make people smile I don't do it to get anything out of it.

What would winning mean to you?

It would be really humbling there are so many fans out there and it was just nice to be nominated.

Why should you be selected winner in your category?

I've been following the New York football Giants since I can remember. I'm born and raised in New England (patriots territory) but before the pats were in the league everyone around here followed the Giants . Thankfully my dad stayed following the giants when the pats came into the league so I grew up watching them with him. I try to make 4 or so games a year if possible ? I'm as die hard as it gets! My whole life through school I've battled with mouth and hands repping my Giants! I decorate my beard for games and been featured on NFL network a couple of times and all over social media. My life revolves around the Giants . Don't invite me anywhere no matter the occasion of the Giants are playing and that includes preseason . My wife always tells the kids" it's almost football season,say good bye to daddy"!!!

What triggered you passion for sports?

My Dad and the Giants.

Favorite sports moment?

2007 beating the undefeated pats in super bowl.

Who would you like to meet and why?

Eli manning . He is everything a pro athlete should be on and off the field.

What charitable programs are you involved with?

A company has released a cancer sucks shirt that has my beard twisted into a cancer ribbon and colored pink. The money for the shirt will go towards cancer research.

How did your character come about?

I asked myself one day if kids can use it in there hair why not my beard? So I started stencil my designs on cardboard pressing it on my beard ,spraying beard with color and BOOM.

How important is an award show for fans?

I think this idea is incredible . The fans are the heartbeat of the teams.

What would winning mean to you?  

Mean everything to me! Show everyone how passionate I am and my loyalty pays off.

Meet Shelton Douthet, What A Fan Awards 2016 NCAA Football Fan of the Year Nominee. This Miami Hurricanes super fan is passionate about his team and dedicated to keeping his brothers memory alive as well. His story will break your heart and inspire you at the same time.

How long have you been a fan?

Well I been a fan going on 20 plus years. Me and brother stayed glue to the tv or our eyes on the field at the Orange Bowl. Basically our whole family gravitated to the University of Miami
 
What's your favorite sport and team?

Football and the Miami Hurricanes.

Tell us why you should be selected winner in your category?

To be honest, Just being nominated is enough award for me. I have never been nominated for anything in my life. I do what I do cause I made a promise to my brother who I loved more than anything in the world and the love for the Hurricanes. I don't do this for fame nor glory. The fact that people say what I do is a inspiration and making other people smile is rewarding.

What triggered your passion for sports?

One word. Family. It is extremely important in my life. Ever since I played football in the peewee league and high school, I considered all my team mates my brothers. We win together, lose together but at the end of the day we still play another game. Football has a stronger bond than any other sport to me.

Favorite sports moment?

I have so many but my most favorite one is my first Hurricane game. I'm not too sure about the date but I was at-least 6 or 7. I remember the seats my brother and I sat in seats 11 and 12, upper deck of the Orange Bowl. They were playing the Syracuse Orange-men. At that moment when I saw the Hurricanes run through the smoke, I knew I was in this for life!

Who would you like to meet and why?

Dwayne "THE ROCK" Johnson. Not only that he was a standout Miami Hurricane player, he was my favorite wrestler. Even after his wrestling career, I followed his acting career. Majority of his roles are family oriented, that's what I admire most about him. His twitter feed is full of inspirational and spiritual quotes. 

What charitable programs are you involved with?

In honor of my brothers memory, my family and I started The Wayne Douthett Memorial Scholarship Foundation. It is awarded to a student that is attending The Marian Center, a school for special needs children. My brother attended that school for many years and it was basically his second home. So we are giving a another child the blessing they gave my brother.

How does you family feel about your passion for sports?

My family is behind my passion %100. They became as big of fans as me. My mother and father dont really come to the games but they rub my helmet before I go as a ritual. Even when I had surgery for my broken leg in 2012, my parents went to the first game and pushed me in my wheelchair 

How was your character and costume created?

Me and my brother were huge Miami Hurricanes fans. Went to every game together, matching jerseys and everything. People knew us as the twins. In 2009, we went to our first away game in Tallahassee. After that game, my brother became sick. I missed a couple of home games to watch the games in the hospital with him. While in the hospital, my brother asked me jokingly when would I wear all the Miami Hurricanes memorabilia to a game. I said "as soon as you get out the hospital, I'll do it". About a week later, he got better and left the hospital. But the pneumonia came back. So unfortunately he passed away. When the Miami Hurricanes were chosen to play in the Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando, I knew I had to keep my promise. So I bought cleats, game used pants, shoulder pads, gloves, and I used one of my helmets I bought from Ebay. I went to the bowl in a full Miami Hurricane uniform. People thought I was an actual player walking around. Some would come and ask why am I dressed li ke this. When I told them, I got a lot of hugs and them telling me they admire my commitment and the love I had for my brother. Some even donated to the scholarship fund me and my parents started. So as the uniforms evolved on the field, so did mine. I tried to keep up and look like I belonged on the field as me and my brother always used to talk about being on the field with the Hurricanes.

How important is it for you to have an award show for fans?

I love the fact that there is an awards show fans. Fans make the game great. Without the passionate one, we wouldn't have the cheeseheads of Greenbay, the Dawg Pound in Cleveland and so on. So why not recognize them? The dedication that most of the people put into their teams so admirable at times.

What would winning mean to you?

As I said before, nominating me is a win for me. But actually winning this award would mean the world. Not only because of what I dress up as but people see how my brother and family mean to me as a whole. Any one who knows me, Im an extremely humble person. So do I deserve to win? Maybe I do but I know there is others. But if I do, this win is not for me. Its for my brother who is watching from above.

Fan Violence At Sporting Events. Is Alcohol, Rivalries or the Media Fueling This Issue?

Fan Violence, Time To Take Back The Stands!

It's the most exciting time of year for fans of football. The NFL Season has begun and college football rivalries are back as well. It's also a time when tailgates and alcohol collide sometimes with aggressive results. This past weekend a number of violent incidents took place with devastating effects. Fans as we all know are passionate about their teams before ever taking a drink, add alcohol to an already explosive environment and the chances of violence increases. No fan should ever be ostracized for supporting their teams no matter where they are.

We all understand defending our home field advantages but not at the extend of bodily harm to opposing teams fans. The competitive physical encounters should only take place on the field of play and or when welcoming a fellow fan with a huge! If fans themselves refuse to be ambassadors to visiting fans who will? More importantly let's remember there will be a time when you will travel to an opposing teams stadium, wouldn't you want to feel safe to cheer for your team? Violence in the stands or outside the venue should be unacceptable to all fans.
