Meet Alan Wald, 2015 What A Fan Awards Nominee for the events biggest recognition the Ultimate Sports Fan of the Year. He's a self proclaimed sports fanatic and his sports resume validates that. He's been a fan of all major sports for many years and spends a great deal of his time attending games of all genres.
Sports fans have been an important part of the explosive success both
collegiate and professional athletics has enjoyed. In 2013 a recognition
award show was created to honor fans and their contribution to the
sports industry it's called the What A Fan Awards. Its been held in
Orlando Florida but will be relocated to Los Angeles California in 2016.
Over the coming weeks we're going to introduce you to some of the
countries most devoted fans of all genres of sports in their own words.
Why should you be selected winner in this category?
I am a sports fanatic that attends over 100 games a year all over the
country. NBA, MLB, NFL, NHL, college football, collage basketball ,
Arena football, and college baseball. Have been an Lakers Season Ticket
holder for 28 years, have been a 20 game ticket holder for the Angels, a
16 game ticket holder for the Anaheim Ducks and a full season ticket
holder for the LA KISS arena football. Have had season tickets for the
San Diego Chargers, LA Kings and mini plan packages for the Clippers in
the past. Was the mascot for Arizona State University for 3 years for
all sports. Heard from 60 teams to turn professional. Attend at least
half of the Arizona State football games in Tempe and the road. 1st
thing I do when I make travel plans is to see which teams are in town.
Have done 5 games in a weekend, and once did 3 football games (college
and pro) in. 24 hours in 2 states- CA and FL. Die hard Miami Dolphins
fan who flies to Miami once s season. Big Yankees fan. Flying to NY in
August for 4 games in 4 days including Posada and Pettette jersey
retirement. Going to Ann Arbor for the Michigan -Ohio State game. Been
to Super Bowls, World Series, Stanley Cups, NBA Finals, Final Fours,
National Championships, Bowl games etc.
What triggered your passion for sports?
My father was the one who introduced me to sports, but my cousins who lived in Brooklyn went to a
lot of games, and started taking me, as my father would only take me to
a couple of games a year.. Once I went to college I didn't have to ask
for permission to go and it's been non-stop since.
Favorite sports moment?
I have plenty, witnessing Kobe Bryant score 81 points live was awesome,
and the Chargers beating the Dolphins in the 1982 playoff game in OT
after the Dolphins came back from 24-0 only to lose, was heart breaking
being a Dolphins fan. Laker Championships, Kings and Ducks Stanley Cups
and Dave Righetti pitching a no-hitter on the 4th of July are up there
as well.
Who would you like to meet and why?
Derek Jeter! Pure class. Seen him play many many times but never met him
personally. Been fortunate to meet more of my other favorites like
Michael Jordan, Dan Marino and Kobe and Shaq.
What charitable organizations are you involved with?
I'm Co-President for the Arizona State Alumni Association Orange County,
CA chapter, and have assisted at Operation Gratitute, Surf Riders and
Habitat for Humanity.
How does your family feel about your passion for sports?
My don loves it, and my wife deals with. My relatives think I'm off the
wall. Before they used to say is he at the game, where now they say he's
there isn't he. People know where I am as I post my adventures on
Facebook.
How important is it to you to have an Award Show for fans?
I think it's awesome that there is an awards program for fans and that
people get recognized. Personally I go to games and watch games for my
own enjoyment. Being nominated or having a chance to win an award for
doing something that I love would be over the top.
