Meet Sister Frances Evan, also known as the "Drum Lady." She is a What A Fan Awards MLB Fan of the Year Nominee. This amazing Texas Ranger super fan has been part of the history of Rangers baseball. The story of her and her Sister is truly remarkable, we are humbled to honor this MLB treasure.
Sports fans have been an important part of the explosive success both
collegiate and professional athletics has enjoyed. In 2013 a recognition
award show was created to honor fans and their contribution to the
sports industry it's called the What A Fan Awards. Its been held in
Orlando Florida but will be relocated to Los Angeles California in 2016.
Over the coming weeks we're going to introduce you to some of the
countries most devoted fans of all genres of sports in their own words.
How long have you been a fan?
Since 1972.
Why should you be selected winner in this category?
Sister Frances has been a Texas Rangers fan since the team moved to
Arlington Texas in 1972. She and her best friend Sister Maggie went to
every home game. They have traveled with the team. They have been to
fantasy baseball camp. Sister Frances has even been known to show up in
the front office of the team to office advice to the GM. She is Rangers
royalty.
What triggered your passion for sports?
Sister Frances was a Tom boy growing up and Sister Maggie learned to love the game through Sister Frances.
Favorite sports moment?
Too many to name. Sister Frances threw out the first pitch in the 2012
Wild Card game against the Orioles. Escorted by her personal friends,
Nolan Ryan and Jim Sundberg.
Who would you like to meet?
The Pope!
What charitable programs are you involved with?
Outside of baseball, Sister Frances was instrumental in started Cancer
Care Services in Fort Worth Texas. A community service to assist
patients and family going through cancer treatments. She was a volunteer
at St. Joseph's hospital in Fort Worth Texas and was very well known
for her loving touch.
How does your family feel about your passion for sports?
Family and friends are excited for Sisters enthusiasm for the sport. At
89 she has a support team in place to make sure she makes it to as many
home games as possible.
How was your character created?
Sister Frances is best known around the ballpark as the drum beating
fan. She inherited the drum in 2003 from longtime rangers fan known as
Zonk (John Lanzillo Jr.) She is very popular the ballpark and fans love
to take selfies wither.
Whats your annual budget for sports?
Very little expense is incurred on Sisters part. She has a benefactor
that provides full season tickets for and her driver. She has a
designated paid parking space. A golf cart ride to the front gate and an
escort to her seat. Fans will usually buy her a hot dog and the beer man
on her isle always provides her with fresh ice water during the game.
How important is it to you to have an Award Show for fans?
It would be such an honor to be recognized as the ultimate fan. Sister
Frances is very humble and doesn't really understand the hoopla that
surrounds her enthusiasm for the game. She has been featured in various
news stories, Wall Street Journal, LA Times and Dallas Morning News. She
and Maggie were honored to be the first fan thru the turnstiles when
the Ballpark in Arlington opened in April 1, 1994. She will leave a
legacy and this award would be the icing on the cake.
What would winning the What A Fan Award mean to you?
Sister Frances has a following. She is grateful for the nomination and
would be humbled to win. It is the fans that will rejoice for her. Three
years ago on her 86th birthday Sister Frances received a standing
ovation from the 30K (plus) crowd as she was serenade with the birthday
song. Winning would be for her fans.
